The SSW Program: What is it?

Foreign individuals can work in Japan in businesses experiencing a labour shortage by obtaining the Specified Skilled Worker Visa (Tokutei Ginou). Two categories exist:

Tokutei Ginou 1-gou, or SSW Type 1:

  • for employees in a certain industry who possess fundamental capabilities.
  • permits a stay of up to five years.
  • Family members cannot be brought.

Tokutei Ginou 2-gou, or SSW Type 2:

  • for employees with more advanced training and expertise.
  • permits permanent residency and admission of family members.
